Goal

The B109 General Library, also known as Te Herenga Mātauranga Whānui, is one of the University of Auckland’s most significant student and staff resources. As part of the university’s ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability, this major refurbishment project reimagined the library as a modern, accessible, and environmentally conscious learning hub.

With the University of Auckland ranked in the top one percent of universities globally for sustainability, this project required a furniture solution that aligned with strict environmental criteria, including life cycle assessment and whole-of-life costing. The design also needed to consider accessibility, functionality, and user comfort for a diverse group of students and staff.

How We Went About It

We worked closely with Architectus and key stakeholders to bring the library vision to life. Custom shop drawings and furniture prototypes were developed and reviewed during the design phase to ensure alignment with functional and aesthetic goals. Southern Beech—locally and sustainably sourced from New Zealand—was used for custom tables, showcasing the natural beauty and unique imperfections of the timber.

Power and USB access points were thoughtfully integrated into key furniture pieces to support seamless device use throughout the space.

Turn Out

The result is a beautifully finished, highly functional academic environment that reflects the University’s sustainability leadership. With natural materials, locally made furniture, and technology-ready integration, the B109 General Library supports both focused study and collaborative learning.
