Christchurch Hospital Waipapa 2019

Following the successful completion of the Outpatients Building in 2018, BFG was engaged to support the next major milestone in Christchurch’s health precinct redevelopment—the Acute Services Building now named Waipapa Hospital. At 62,000m² and ten storeys high, this is the largest hospital building in New Zealand and a vital hub for acute and emergency care.

The facility includes operating theatres, intensive care units, radiology, acute medical assessment, and an expanded emergency department, serving as a critical part of Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand’s clinical service network.

Outfitting a hospital of this scale presented complex logistical, clinical, and technical challenges. This project required a partner with robust manufacturing capabilities, deep healthcare knowledge, and the ability to coordinate furniture production and delivery with precision.

BFG was tasked with designing, manufacturing, and supplying a broad range of healthcare-specific furniture. This included:

• Workplace furniture for clinical and administrative teams
• Bespoke seating solutions tailored for high-use public and waiting areas
• Waiting room furniture for Individual areas with specific requirements
• Customised bedside tables and clinical support furniture designed for patient rooms

To meet the tight delivery schedule, a carefully planned logistics strategy was implemented. Over a 10-week period, BFG shipped one 40-foot container from Auckland to the Christchurch site each Monday, ensuring a steady and coordinated supply flow to align with the installation program.

The Acute Services Building project stands out as a defining achievement for us. We delivered a large-scale, high-stakes healthcare fit-out on time, to spec, and in alignment with the needs of clinicians, patients, and operational teams. The result is a world-class hospital environment that supports the highest standards of acute care—reinforcing BFG’s reputation as a trusted partner in New Zealand’s healthcare infrastructure.
